Raging Pods: A Fiery Tribute to the Chile Culture of New Mexico

A SHORT FILM ABOUT CHILE CULTURE

Raging Pods,”  a short film I made years ago, showcased at the Costa Rica International Film Festival, takes viewers on a  journey into the heart of New Mexico’s chili culture. The film uncovers the chili’s deep roots in the state, where it’s more than a spicy crop—it’s a lifestyle, a community symbol, and a historical thread.

Audiences will explore the rich history of the chili, from its cultivation to distinctive flavors, with insights from local farmers, chefs, and scientists who reveal the secrets of its cultivation and the chemistry behind its heat.

The film also brings to life the state’s vibrant chili festivals, showcasing how these events celebrate not just the chili, but also New Mexico’s diverse cultural heritage. The story culminates in an examination of the friendly yet intense rivalry between northern and southern New Mexico over who grows the best chili—a debate that attests to the passionate love New Mexicans have for their cherished crop.

“Raging Pods” is a fiery tribute to New Mexico’s chili culture—a heated topic, indeed, that’s as captivating as it is unmissable.
